OVERVIEW OF STRING ART PROJECT

1.                  We will create a String Art Project.

2.                We will work in & out of class.

3.                 We will incorporate many geometry concepts, including structuring circles, squares and measuring angles and sections.

4.                 Our finished products will be displayed in our 8th grade house area.  We would like to enter a few in next year’s State Fair.

5.                 We will also take digital pictures and create a power point, everyone receiving one slide.

6.                 Let’s have fun with this and be creative.

SUPPLIES PROVIDED BY STUDENT:

a)    3 -4 colors of good quality sewing thread

b)    small hammer

c)    1 ¾” nails with small heads

SUPPLIES PROVIDED BY INSTRUCTOR:

a)    pieces of plywood

b)    black paint and brushes

c)    washers

d)    pliers

POSSIBLE PRE-ACTIVITIES

A.    “DISCOVERING THE MAGICAL PI”

B.   “POLYGON CAPTURE”

C.    “SORTING ACT. FOR POLYGONS”

D.   “GEOMETRY, COLOR & PIET MONDRIAN”

E.   DRAWING ACCURATE CIRCLES WITH GIVEN DIAMETERS

F.    DRAWING ACCURATE SQUARES AND FINDING THE CENTER

G.   FINDING EQUADISTANT POINTS AND THE PERIMETERS AND CONNECTING IN  DIFFERENT PATTERN TO DISCOVER THE RESULTS

(Purpose of pre-activities is to help students be familiar with shapes and their properties)

STARTING DIRECTIONS FOR PROJECT

1)     Watch a power point presentation to see samples and get more specific directions  (view rubric)

2)   Have time to experiment on circles and squares to help make a choice

3)   Set a deadline

4)   Students make shape choice and measure and on paper mark points around their shape (directions and help given in class and also previous work with degrees and cm measuring)

5)   Paint plywood black

6)   Attach paper drawing to dried plywood

7)    Practice hammering on scrap wood

(trace letter of first name)

                           8) Pound nails onto plywood going through the paper

drawing and keeping the nails straight

9)   Use washers to keep height of each nail accurate

10)           Tear off paper drawing from nails and begin threading

THREADING INFORMATION AND TIPS

v     Pick a starting nail and mark it

v     This nail will be the starting nail for each layer

v     Always go around nails in same direction

v     Keep thread tight

v     Put the spool of thread on a nail that is in a piece of wood to keep both hands free

v     Bottom layer should have smallest center opening and top layer should have the largest opening

(this will be discovered in pre-activities)

    FINISHING PROJECT

ü      After thread design is complete, secure and adjust each layer of thread

ü      Use rubric to evaluate  (student, math and art instructors)

ü      Digital pictures will be taken of projects and displayed on website

ü      Each class will also create a power point with each student responsible for one slide

ü      Projects will be displayed in our 8th house area

The instructor will evaluate any changes that need to be done with the project with help from student input!!
